An archive record is one or more items of material (usually digitised) from the physical archive that form a single entry in the archive catalogue. An archive record comprises a number of parts:

  1. a main title,
  2. a digital copy of the original material, such as a picture or document (note that text only records have no digital file),
  3. a general description or information about the record,
  4. specific information about the record - the record details,
  5. digital copies of any associated materials, such as further pictures or documents from a set, and their general and specific details,
  6. any comments that have been made by site visitors about the record.

There are also different types of archive record. Each record type is displayed in its own frame.

Images

When an archive record contains a single image, select the Enlarge Image link below the image to view the image full screen in a new browser window. Some single images may have a circular magnifier in the top left corner. Move the magnifier around the image with a mouse (tap where required if using a touch screen) to magnify the area within the circle. This feature is not available on screens of less that 960 Pixels in width.

When an archive record contains multiple images, these may be displayed as a slideshow. Select the Next and Previous controls at the sides of the images to move through the slideshow. The dots below the images may also be used to select individual slides. The slide number is displayed in the top left corner of the image. Click/tap a slide to view the image full screen in a new browser window.

When an archive record contains multiple images, these may also be displayed as a gallery when the images are of different sizes. Click/tap an image to view it full screen in a new browser window.

Some archive records that contain two images that are the front and back of a single item may be displayed as a flip image. Hover over or tap the image to flip it over to see the reverse. Hover off or tap off the image to flip it back to see the front again.

Documents

These are displayed in a PDF reader frame with controls to navigate through the document if multi-paged, search the content text, print and download the file.

Sound Recordings

These are displayed with audio player controls.

Video Recordings

These are displayed with video player controls.

Select the Reply link at the end of a comment to display the comment form and submit a comment related to that comment. Select the Add a Comment link at the foot of the archive record to display the comment form and submit a comment unrelated to any existing comment.
