The Public Switch
Collections, categories, records and sub records (entities) all have a public switch which determines whether the entity is displayed on the public interface of the website. The switch may be ON (displayed) or OFF (not displayed).
There are however relationships between these entities and their respective public switches could be set differently. The following explains how the public rules are applied for the different entities.
Collections
If the collection public switch is set to OFF:
- the collection is not available for inclusion in any list,
- the collection is not included in any counts,
- none of the records assigned to that collection are available for inclusion in any list or display, irrespective of the record public status.
Categories
If the public switch is set to OFF:
- the category is not available for inclusion in any list,
- the category is not included in any counts,
- none of the records assigned to that category are available for inclusion in any list or display under that category, irrespective of the record public status.
- a record with its public switch set to ON will still be available for display under a second or subsequent category to which it is assigned that has its public switch is set to ON.
Records
If the public switch is set to OFF:
- the record is not available for inclusion in any entity list
- the record is not included in any counts,
- the record is excluded from any search results,
- if the record type is image, the record is excluded from the slideshow, the most popular items and the latest pictures lists.
- none of its sub records are available for display.
Sub Records
If the public switch is set to OFF:
- the sub record is not displayed when the full record is displayed.
Timeline, Record Searches, Tag Lists
A record is only included in any of the above if:
- the collection to which it is assigned has its public switch set to ON
- at least one of the categories to which it is assigned has its public switch set to ON
- the record public switch is set to ON.
