Archive Record Mapping

Each archive record may be displayed on a map with a marker that, when clicked/tapped, displays information about the record in a popup window that also contains a link to the record details. If the archive record is an image then a thumbnail of that image is also included in the map marker popup window. The images of all the map markers with images are displayed in an image gallery at the bottom of the map. Selecting an image in the gallery opens the popup window of the marker to which it is related.

Archive record mapping is optional and should only be applied to archive records that have a distinctive sense of place.

The mapping display is managed by another WordPress plugin called Waymark. The Community Archive plugin has been integrated with the Waymark plugin so that the mapping attributes of an archive record are converted to the marker data for displaying on a map.

There may be any number of maps. Maps are created using Waymark and simply consist of a title. Each map is displayed on a page using a Waymark shortcode. It is recommended that each map is displayed on its own page rather than multiple maps on a single page.

One or more maps must exist before an archive record can be assigned to a map. If two or more maps exists, an archive record can easily be moved from one map to another map by changing the selection in a map drop-down list.

Map Attributes

Map selection and the selection of the type of map marker are made from drop-down lists. Map markers also need a latitude and longitude value to know where they should be displayed on the map. The easiest way to find the latitude and longitude values of where an archive record should be located is to open Google Maps in a new browser window then:

  1. if the map is not already focused on Staveley village and you are currently in the village, use the your location icon in the bottom right corner of the map to display a marker as to where you are. If you are not in the village or do not have an active GPS service on your device, zoom and pan the map manually until Staveley is in the centre.
  2. right mouse click on the location you want to place the archive record marker and the latitude and logitude values of the selected location are displayed in a popup widow.
  3. left mouse click over the two values to copy them to the clipboard for entry into the archive record mapping attributes. The latitude value will be in the 54.nnnnnn range and the longitude in the -1.nnnnnn range.

Both the latitude and longitude values should be to six decimal places. This will place the marker a level of accuracy of about 10cm.

Constraints

Staveley covers only a small geographical area so all the place related archive records are likely to be located quite close together. Maps can become confusing and difficult to read if there are too many markers in a small area, even when the map is expanded to the maximum scale. If a map becomes crowded with markers, consider creating another map and moving some of the archive records to the new map.

Risk

This plugin follows the Waymark rules for constructing map markers. If at some future date the Waymark plugin is updated with a change to those rules then the integration between the two plugins may break. If this scenario occurs this plugin will need to be updated as necessary.
